Paper craft: Greetings/Gift cards

Use scrap paper to make this holder to give a giftcard or simply a message.
You will need: The template, two sheets of scrap paper, cello-tape, double sided tape or glue, a scalpel and a cutting mat.

1. Cover one of the sheets of paper with strips of double sided tape or glue.

2. Stick the two sheets of scrap paper together.
3. Place the template on the scrap paper, Stick both to the cutting mat. Using the scalpel cut around the template.
4. Once cut out your net should look like this.
5. Separate the template and your net. Using the template as a guide crease your net on the 'fold lines'
6. Stick a piece of double sided tape to the inside of the holder to attach your card or message.7. Attach your card or message, then fold each flap into each other, alternating between over and under for each edge.8. Your holder is finished!

This week our interviewee is Andrew Groves. UK based Andrew's work is often influenced by his love of the great outdoors. His use of softer colours and organic shapes result in imagery of exploration and the wilderness. Here he answers our quick 10:

What is your greatest achievement? Remaining relatively sane.

How would you describe your work/style to someone who hadn't seen it? Graphic representations of natural phenomenons with extra eyes.

What piece/product/design do you wish you had thought of? Nobi Nobi Boy.

Who would you most like to collaborate with? I prefer to go it alone.

What is the worst job you have ever had? Flipping burgers at McDonalds.

If you were on Death Row, What would your last meal be? I don't think I'd be very hungry.

What is the greatest song of all time? Impossible to answer, but Freebird is a good one.

What do you dislike most about popular culture? Most of it.

What is the greatest invention of all time? It hasn't been invented yet.

If you didn't do what you do. What would you do? Anything that facilitates more time spent outdoors.

Use scrap paper to make these cute little gift boxes. Perfect in time for Valentines day.

You will need: The template, scrap paper, cello-tape, double sided tape, a scalpel and a metal ruler.

1. Place the template on the scrap paper, Stick both to the cutting mat. Using the scalpel cut around the template.

2. Once cut out your net should look like this.

3. Separate the template and your net. Using the template as a guide crease your net on the 'fold lines'

4. Place a piece of double sided tape on the outside edge of the tab A.

5. Stick tab A to the inside of B.

6. Place double sided tape on the marked corners of C and D. Also folding down E and F.

7. Fold and stick C and D down.

8. Turing the box over fold down G and H. Slot I and J together.

9. Your box is finished!

After 20 years working as a graphic designer Tim Hopgood decided to take the plunge and become a freelance illustrator. He has gone on to write and illustrate picture books, even winning the Best Emerging Illustrator at the Booktrust Early Years Awards. He was kind enough to answer our quick 10.

What is your greatest achievement? Happiness.

How would you describe your work/style to someone who hadn't seen it? My work is colourful, graphic and bold. I try to keep it looking as fresh and spontaneous as possible.

What piece/product/design do you wish you had thought of? I love the energy and style of the 1950s LP covers designed by David Stone Martin for Verve Records.

Who would you most like to collaborate with? Tricia Guild. I'd like to see my work used on fabric or wallpaper.

What is the worst job you have had? Early morning cleaner was definitely the hardest!

If you were on Death Row, what would your last meal be? Macaroni Cheese (please can the top be very crispy!) with lots of ketchup (Heinz).

What is the greatest movie of all time? Goodfellas - great characters, fantastic story telling, art direction and styling.

What do you dislike most about popular culture? 500 channels of cheap TV. Less is more!

What is the greatest invention of all time? The radio.

If you didn't do what you do. What would you do? I always quite liked the idea of being a chef, but I'm not sure I could stand the heat!

Yorkshire born, Birmingham based illustrator Ben Javens kicks off the interviews for 2012. His bright and charming designs have a gorgeous printed quality to them. Combined with his stylised characters and bold colour pallet it results in designs that are both endearing and oh so fun. He was kind enough to take 5 minutes to answer our quick 10.

What is your greatest achievement? My daughter Mabel.

How would you describe your Work/Style to someone who hadn't seen it? Uncharacteristically Chipper.

What piece/product/design do you wish you had thought of? A toy gun with a bulldogs head, which opens its mouth and squeaks when you pull the trigger.

Who would you most like to work with? My daughter, Mabel.

What is the worst job you have ever had? Feeding copper piping into a machine that bends it...no wait...throwing old clothes into a machine that shredded them...no wait...peeling stickers off the side of old vans...no wait...stacking pick and mix salad dressing pots...no wait...

If you were on death row what would your last meal be? Pie.

What is the greatest film of all time? The Graduate.

What do you dislike most about popular culture? Bad music.

What is the greatest invention of all time? T.V

If you didn't do what you do, what would you do? Sleep.

Three easy techniques to jazz up your Christmas presents.
Snowflake:
Cutout a simple paper snowflake and attach it to the gift using a ribbon.

Concertina:
Create an interesting effect by making a concertina and adding it to the gift.

Layering:

By using strips of scrap or folding unwanted wrap you can create a textured effect to a plain wrap.

Don't throw away your scraps of gift wrap! Decorate your Christmas presents with these easy and cute pom poms.

You will need: Some scrap paper, a circular object, scissors, a hole punch, a pencil and some ribbon.

1. Using your circular object draw between 8-12 circles depending on how much scrap paper you have.

2. Cut out the circles.

3. Fold the circles in half.

4. Punch a hole near the edge in the middle of each semi-circle.

5. Thread the ribbon through both holes.

6. Repeat this with each of the semi-circles.

7. Tie the ribbon around your gift with the all the semi circles threaded on.

8. Fan out the sections so your pom pom is full and even.

How brilliant is Andy's wooden Christmas 'card'?

Paper Craft..... Gift Bow.

We HATE waste here at 1973 so we think why not use scraps of leftover wrapping paper to make fun gift bows to adorn your presents this Christmas.

You will need:
Any left over paper, ruler, double sided tape, scalpel and a pencil.

1. Take the scrap paper and measure 9 identical strips. Our strips were 10cm x 3cm.

2. Using the scalpel cut the paper into strips.

3. Take a strip and curl it under to form a point.

4. Turning the point over use the double sided tape stick the back edges together.

5. After you have repeated this process with 8 of the 9 strips you can start attaching the points to create the gift bow. Start with the first 2 and make a right angle sticking them together with the double sided tape.

6. Keep adding so that the points are evenly placed.

7. Now the first layer is complete it should have 4 corners.

8. Place point 5 in between 2 of the points on the first layer, basically filling in the gap.

9. Keep adding the points to fill in the gaps.

10. Once all 8 points have been attached the gift bow should look like this.

11. Take the final strip and curl into a loop, sticking the edges with double sided tape.

12. Place a piece of tape in the centre of the gift bow stick the curled strip in the centre.

Teesside born, Brighton based illustrator Sean Sims creates fun and vibrant illustrations. His Colourful designs have a distinctive retro feel yet they are still stylish and contemporary. He was kind enough to answer our quick 10.

What is your greatest achievement? - (apart from working with you guys of course!)... seriously!! I am a big fan of vintage fisher-price toys from the 1960's & 70's, and was recently asked by fisher-price USA to create a set of illustrations in the flavour of their 'classic' toys of that era in celebration of their 60th birthday. All down to them seeing the 'Playtime' range.
.. on a personal level... DJing on the Teesside leg of The Red Wedge Tour in 1984 with Billy Bragg (God bless our Billy)
...(and my two beautiful kiddies, Stanley and Mabel)

How would you describe your work/style to someone who hadn't seen it?

- Edwin Star - H.A.P.P.Y 'I plan to help your day go by' or 1970's Primary School library-esque

What piece/product/design do you wish you had thought of? The tape cassette springs to mind, that little object that for my generation created millions of bedroom band demos, musical love letters and taped highlights of John Peel! For a product that is now on the scarp heap of inventions, kids still find it's iconography cool! Much more fun than the boring iPod. I mean, you can'y decorate an iPod & post it through the girl you fancy's letterbox.

Who would you most like to collaborate with? Rolf Harris, just for the fun! Or for seriousness London Transport, to bring back the art of the illustrated travel poster. LT were once such brilliant patrons of illustration. In these times of gloom I think we need some beautiful design to cheer us all up.

What is the worst job you have ever had? Not having a job.

If you were on Death Row, what would your last meal be? Being a Northerner, I do like a good pie (mash & mushy peas) and a packet of Bourbons. Failing that a special dinner cooked for me by TV Chef Rusty Lee to cheer me up.

What is the greatest movie of all time? Tough question! It depends on my mood really. But if I have to say one I'll go for 'Tears of the Black Tiger' the Thai Western by Wisit Sasanatieng. Such a wonderful film on all levels. It is so beautifully coloured, mad as a hatter and a great love story too. A crazy genre bending box of delights! Big fan of Wes Anderson too with The Darjeeling Limited a close second.

What do you dislike most about popular culture? The glamourising of ignorance and (in general) really rubbish music. Also this massive obsession with mobile phones. Over production in everything - less is more folks.

What is the greatest invention all time? Apollo the moon landing has always been a great fascination of min since being a kid. To send three men to the moon in a pre-computer era is simply amazing! I also love the footage of the countdown and the incredible power from the engines! It's a thing of marvel and beauty. Oh and instant coffee and Nurofen too.

If you didn't do what you do. What would you do? Professional car boot sale scourer.

Sandra Dieckmann's enchanting woodland beasts and navajo prints are so strikingly beautiful they can't help but conjure up festive daydreams for their viewers. Her intricately drawn subjects are often accompanied by graphic patterns brought to life by a vibrant colour pallet which showcases her incredible talent perfectly. Born in Germany, living in East London, Sandra was kind enough to answer our 10 little questions.

How would you describe your work to someone who hadn't seen it? Colourful, detailed, crisp, folky, inspired by the natural world and I guess a little dreamy.

What/Who has had the biggest impact on your work? I think it's what rather than who. Realising that you only have one shot at happiness - meaning this one life - and believing that being happy means creating your life in the best way that you can.

Who would you most like to collaborate with? Someone honest, driven, and open. Also someone that has time for the world and not just themselves. People with open eyes. People that make eye contact and aren't scared to tell a long story. People that can say 'not so good' when asked 'how are you?' Someone whose work I admire and that I feel can bring as much to me as I can them. Maybe David Attenborough will take me on one of his ventures one day ;-)

Who amongst your contemporaries do you admire? I admire my good friend Jamie Mills' work for it's honesty and beauty. I'm also a big fan of Caitlin Hackets's detailed wonder worlds and creatures and I love Jack Hudson for his colours and shapes. Lizzie Stewart's characters are darling and the taste of history and romance that her images leave behind I find enchanting.

I think I could go on as there is some great talent out there at the moment but hey! Here you have a few.

What has been your biggest work achievement to date? Honestly. Turning down a big contract that would have seen my illustrations washed all over shops. It's so hard when integrity collides with potential income but I think it's important to stay true to your art.

The designs I did for Moment skies that will be in stores next year has been an amazing opportunity, a fun job with a great client.

It's your last meal on Death Row. What would you have? Nothing. Why would I need to eat if I was about to die?

What is the greatest invention of all time?

In First place: The Bed.

In Second place: (but only because it makes me sad sometimes that lonely souls spiral deeper into isolation and eye to eye communication decreases) The Internet. Without it I would have to go knocking on doors and would be annoying people on the phone. Work would be double as hard and twice as slow.

Itunes on Shuffle. What is the fourth song that plays? Motorbike - Wooden Ships.

If you didn't do what you do, what would you do? I'd definitely be studying again to become a veterinary surgeon and practitioner.

What do you dislike most about popular culture? The way that people are made to believe that they are making choices, when in fact it's like chicken feed, everything is thrown right in front of them. Switch off the TV nation and look at each other.

How would you define your shops style? There is no shop style but we're into design, typography and creativity. So if we like it, we get it in and see if it sells.

What sets your store apart from your competitors? We enjoy it! And we are passionate about finding new products and designing our range of T-shirts and other products all at the same time.

Interview: Steve Scott

Australian native Steve Scott is a quite extraordinary illustrator and animator. His amazing psychedelic visuals were the backdrop to Led Zeppelin's re-union in 2007. His client list is as impressive as his portfolio so we very excited when he took the time to answer our 10 questions.

What is your greatest achievement? I would say either seeing my animations on stage at the O2 Arena for the Led Zeppelin re-union gig or seeing my work at the Guggenheim. Both had a slightly mind blowing quality.

How would you describe your work/style to someone who hadn't seen it? hmmmm that's a hard one.... pop, psychedelia, humour.

Who/what inspires you most? There's a few people I constantly look back to for inspiration, for example Tadanori Yokoo's 60s screens prints are sublime, full of great detail & humour & colour. Of course Herges Tin Tin. More recently I've really fallen for the fluid lines of french comics artist, Christophe Blain.

Who would you most like to collaborate with? I would love to work with a good writer such as Jeff Vandameer and create a creepy, weird comic.

What is the worst job you have had? Making T shirt designs for a psychopathic boss in australia who threatened to destroy my career when I said was leaving.

What one piece of advice would you give your 15 year old self? Kiss that girl.

Where would you like to see yourself in 5 years time? Not under the rule of plutocratic bankers and corporations.

What do you dislike most about popular culture? X factor brave new world brainless entertainment.

What is the greatest invention of all time? The internet. I don't think I would be as busy without it.

If you didn't do what you do. What would you do? Probably be a homeless bum. Prior to my current career I was fired for smashing up two cars as a car park attendant.

Paper Craft..... Paper Pom Poms.

Versatile and alternative paper decorations

You will need:

Tissue paper between 6-12 sheets depending on how dense you want your pom poms to be, scissors, pencil/pen, ruler, pipe cleaner, string.

1.Measure the length of your paper then divide and mark the edge as a fold guide e.g the paper shown was 24cm in length so it was marked every 3cms, this will ensure even pleats which should result in an even and full pom pom.

2.Using your guide pleat the paper back and fourth to create a concertina.

3. Fold the concertina in half and then secure with the pipe cleaner in the middle. (This will later be used to attached the string so you can hang your pom pom up)

4. Draw a semicircle at the tip of the concertina, then repeat with the other end.

5. Cut just inside the semicircle leaving a rounded edge.

6. Repeat with the other side.

7. Open out the concertina to create a circular shape with scalloped edges.

8. Start with one end i.e the pipe cleaner being the middle, and start folding the 'petals' back to the centre. Being extra careful not to rip or tear the tissue. Do this alternately on each side.

9. You should have created one half of your pom pom. It may not be perfect yet but you can shape it later. Then start the same process on the other half making the pom pom whole.

10. Once the pom pom is more spherical you can start improving its shape by smoothing any creases and making the spaces between the 'petals' more even.

11. Attach the string to the pipe cleaner in the centre.

Interview: Paul Thurlby

Paul Thurlby has a contemporary illustrative style with a perfectly imperfect finish. His illustrated Alphabet range is so brilliant with its retro inspired typography that it has been produced as prints, books and even greetings cards. As a valued part of the 1973 family we thought it was only right that we asked him our 10 questions.

What is your greatest achievement? Getting out of bed this morning...... No, seriously, it would have to be my alphabet book and prints.

How would you describe your work/style to someone who hadn't seen it? Ha ha, I usually just tell people to have a look themselves . But, seeing as you are asking, I would say simple, graphic, humorous, retro-modern.

Which piece/product/design do wish you had thought of? Any really clever and simple idea. I really like Jon Klassen's children's book 'I want my hat back' right now.

Who would you most like to collaborate with? The Beatles for an album cover. Is that still possible? Otherwise, Sir Peter blake would be interesting to work with.

What is the worst job you have ever had? I was a student. It was summer. I was starving. I answered an ad in a newspaper that read 'Earn Money'. It was telesales for double glazing and kitchens. I hated it. Target the old and vulnerable they said. I lasted 30mins before saying I needed the loo . I made my exit and didn't look back.

If you were on Death Row what would your last meal be? Baked Beans. Hopefully, after consumption, I would produce enough toxic gas to be able to knock out the guards and make my escape.

What is the greatest movie of all time? Citizen Kane. That's what they all say right? Impossible question!

What do you dislike most about popular culture? The way we are all conditioned by the government and mass media.

What is the greatest invention of all time? The humble pencil.

If you didn't do what you do. What would you do?

I'd probably be working in an office and my eyes would be glazed over. Feeling sleepy.

Interview: Stuart Kolakovic

This week Kingston graduate and mega talent Stuart Kolakovic took a couple of moments to answer our 10 questions.

What is your greatest achievement? I haven't done anything particularly worth while noting. And probably won't.

How would you describe your work to someone who hadn't seen it? Pointless. Although I've been trying to push more of my personal artwork recently (which is completely different to my illustration work), www.hermaninclusus.co.uk, to try and keep my morale up. One day Stuart Kolakovic will die and Herman will rule supreme.

What piece/product/design do you wish you had thought of? The skateboard. Or anything that would make me so rich so I don't have to draw anymore.

Who would you most like to collaborate with? Tony Lommi.

What is the worst job you have ever had? All of them.

If you were on Death Row, what would be your last meal be? Whatever Dre and Snoop are having.

What is the greatest movie of all time? Some of my favourites off the top of my head include "The Texas Chainsaw Massacre" (OG), 'Braindead" the "Dollars Trilogy", "Koyaanisqatsi", Toy Machine's "Welcome to Hell", Blinds "Video Day's", Herzog's remake of "Nosferatu".

What do you dislike most about popular culture? Most of it.

What is the greatest invention of all time? Heavy Metal.

If you didn't do what you do. What would you do? Be a Serial Killer. Or a Wizard.

Paper Craft..... Stars.

These cute and seasonal decorations are very simple to make.

You will need:

Star template, 1 x wrapping paper, ruler, cutting mat, scalpel, pen/pencil, compass, glue stick, hole punch, string.

1. Print out the template and stick it onto your chosen wrap.

2. Cut around the templates that are now stuck onto the wrap.

3. With each piece, fold up the edges on the dotted lines that are shown on the template. These 2 flaps should be folded toward the patterned side of the paper (the outside of the

star.)

4. Lay out five of the cutouts. This will form one half of the star.

5. Attach all the flaps to each other using a glue stick, with the pattern facing outwards.

6.When all five sections are attached do the same to the other five. Then apply glue to the edges of the points of the star.

7. Stick together both halves of the star.

8. Once the glue has dried punch a hole at the end of one of the stars using a hole punch.

9. Then thread some string/thread through, tie a knot, and it is
ready to be hung!

How would you define your shop style? I would describe the shop as "eclectic chic". (A mixture of new and vintage home-wares, high quality local art and craft, vintage clothes and high end kids toys).

What sets you store apart from the others? People constantly come into the shop and tell me how beautiful it is. (I try to live up to the name!). We are big supporters of local art and craft and are a major supporter and fund raiser for the E17 Art Trail. We were voted by our customers as one of the Best Small Shops In Britain in the Telegraph Magazine awards organised by Mary Portas. We give great customer service wether a customer is spending 99p or £500 and we always make everyone feel welcome. We have pop up shops every week end to give young designer makers an opportunity to show off their wares, which in turn makes the shop more interesting for our clients. i spend a lot of time restyling the shop and customers love that. The stock is ever changing. We have the most laid back cat in the east end called Jassie Mo. Children drag their parents in to see her.

In short VERY independent and as far from a high street chain as you can get.

Interview: Marc Boutavant.

French illustrator Marc Boutavant's style appeals to adults and children alike. His characters evoke nostalgia yet they are still contemporary in their design. His ability to create vibrant yet winsome illustrations is quite unique and has secured him some amazing commissions for companies such as The New York Times, Sky + and Marks & Spencer. He has also illustrated many brilliant children's books, most notably 'Around the World with Mouk'.

Interview: Adrian Johnson

Liverpool born, London based Illustrator Adrian Johnson has a very graphic yet quirky style. His subject matter often varies from stylised characters to bold patterns and has landed him some impressive comissions with brand giants such as Mastercard, Vodafone, Paul Smith, Adidas and Stüssy.

He was kind enough to answer our quick questions and share with us some of his work..

What is your greatest achievement? Not there yet. Still working on trying to achieve the unachieveable. Come back when I'm dead.

How would you describe your work/style to someone who hadn't seen it? Simple sophistication.

Who/What inspires you most? Everything and nothing in particular.

Who would you most like to work with? Paul Rand. But he's no longer with us. Alive? Scarlett Johansson. Seriously (you mean creatively, right)? Dick Bruna - 'Living Legend'

What is the worst job you have ever had? Selling draught excluders and other textile goods in Paddy's Market, Liverpool.

If you had a theme song what would it be? Something with Spanish horns and xylophones... and it must involve some sort of 'ensemble'.

Last meal on Death Row. What would you have? Szechuan. If I'm going to burn in hell I might as well fuel the flames early doors.

Where would you like to see yourself in 5 years time? Less tired, more inspired.

What is the greatest invention of all time? The perfect cheese with the perfect wine. Boom!

If you didn't do what you do. What would you do? Well, I have a real talent for doing nothing, so something that would utilise that talent. I would say 'sleep more'.

Blanca Gómez of Cosas Minimas is a Madrid based Illustrator and Graphic designer whose simple and clean designs are fun and modern. She was kind enough to take the time to answer some of our questions.

What is your greatest achievement to date? I think my greatest achievement would be that I'm able to develop my own career. Also, lately I had the opportunity of illustrating some children's books. Maybe it sounds silly, but that's also a great achievement for me, as I considered some years ago the illustrating stories was a big challenge.

How would you describe your work/style to someone who hadn't seen it? Simple, graphic... Cheerful, but somehow a bit melancholic sometimes.

Who/ What inspires you most?It's difficult to answer this question without saying the classic cliché: everything that surrounds me. So I'll just mention some of the things that have attracted my attention lately: The hidden signs of John Carpenter’s ‘They live' film; the Portuguese city of Port; the last Houellebecq novel (The map and the territory); certain scene shot the country from Richard Ayoade's film "Submarine", although I didn't enjoy the film as much; or the tomboy girls pictures from the past at tomboystyle blog. All these thing flashed across my head, and I suppose that some sensations remain, and then something comes out of it all.

Who would you most like to collaborate with? To be honest, I have no idea. I love the work of many people, but, either I admire them too much to consider I could collaborate with them, or their ways are so different that I can't imagine a form of collaboration. Usually, both things happen at the same time...

Besides, I've been working alone for a long time, and I find it difficult to work with other people at this point. There's a nice exception: my studio mate Juanjo López; For some reason, his fonts and my drawings fit well together.

What is the worst job you have ever had? I've been lucky, I never had a McJob. Having said that, I worked on a graphic design studio where one employee lost her hair due to stress.

If you were on Death Row, what would you eat? Meatballs with French Fries cooked by my mother, coffee... and a last cigarette, please!

Where would you like to see yourself in 5 years? More or less where I am now, but wiser, calmer and more organised.

What do you dislike most about popular culture? The role of mass media.

What is the greatest invention of all time? The bed (well, not exactly an invention) and books. And the bed-book kit!

If you didn't do what you do. What would you do? I guess I would still be working as a graphic designer. If not, I probably would be flipping burgers, considering the current job situation in my country.

How would you define your shop style? Plaisir has a happy, relaxed style. We love bold colour and pattern. We sell things that are both beautiful and useful and we love handmade things made by people who are brilliant at what they do and who really care about what they make.

What sets your shop apart from the others? We work really hard to surprise and delight our customers. From our window displays which change every week, to the product displays in the roll-top bath that sits in the middle of our shop-floor. We also give out free homemade cake to our customers every Saturday!
